It happens every time we move.
I experience some sort of existential crisis – where I question if my life has any meaning, purpose or value.
You relate, right?!
Because here you are in another brand new place where you know no one, you have no job, your stuff is all broken from the move, your mother is 3,000 miles away, and life just feels…sucky.
It’s a thing.
And if you’re anything like me, during your existential crisis you’re going to have a minor (okay fine…major) emotional meltdown at 3 a.m.
This meltdown is also slightly irrational because you’re basically acting like the world is ending when it’s more like world on tilt vs. world ending.
So…you call your long distance best friend.
At 3 a.m.
Like a crazy person.
And she’s going to answer (of course), and she’s going to talk some sense into you.
She’s going to talk you off the proverbial ledge and back to a place where you can make some local friends (not as good as her, but good enough) and find a hair stylist and the grocery store with the cheapest prices.
Which brings me to my point…
Long distance best friends are actually the best thing ever. And there are 7 reasons why.
If you have a long-distance best friend that you can call at 3 a.m. and share neurotic and illogical thoughts in between ugly sobs, then you are one helluva charmed, favored, fortunate and prosperous person.
1. They give it to you straight.
First, see above.
Second…
This straight talk also shows up when you’re looking for a ball dress, there’s an impending deployment, the kids have gone feral or your plans got messed up again due to another egregious homecoming date change.
She is going to listen first. Talk you down later.
Then, she’s going to agree with everything you said. She’ll tell you that everything you’re feeling is totally valid.
(Bring on the warm fuzzy feels.)
Then, she is going to slap you out of it and help you find solutions.
(Bring on the wake up call.)
It’s just what she does.
And it’s amazing.
2. It’s always like no time has past.
No matter how much time goes by, the second you hear her voice or see her in person, it’s like you’ve been together every day for the past 10 years.
Everything falls right into place like it used to be.
There’s a comfort level there that you don’t have with other friends, which makes the time most enjoyable and relaxing.
3. When you do meet up, it’s the bright spot of your year.
You always remember your meetups. Like the time you snorted Diet Coke out of your nose, or the time you almost missed your flight to NYC together. Or let’s not forget the time you peed your pants from laughing so hard (yeah, she’s never going to let you live that one down).
Your meetups are a time that feels fun, easy-going and you can totally read each other’s minds. What’s not to love?!
4. It’s a fantastic sign you have a friend for life.
This is not the friend you hang out with because you don’t have anyone else.
And this is not the fair-weather friend you’ll hang with at one duty station and never see again after you move.
This is the friend you’ll have by your side through the thick and thin, and the distance will never matter.
You have a lifelong close friend, and that’s something most people would kill to have. You basically won the friend lottery.
5. They make a great excuse for a trip.
Did anyone say girls weekend? Well…if you insist!
Road trip? I’m in!
You’re moving to Hawaii? Fantastic! Now I have to take a trip there.
Just force me to become a world traveler why don’t you.
Okay…you win!
See you soon!
6. You cherish what it means to have an amazing friend.
You completely understand that you hit the gold mine with your long distance BFF.
No one else would put up with all your shenanigans the way she does. You can’t put a price on that, and you’re smart enough to never let her go.
You call her on her birthday. Regularly text her. And let’s not forget the snail mail and surprise packages.
7. You feel like kind of a big deal when you’re with her.
Let’s be real. You know you’re not a big deal, but she treats you like a big deal, and who wouldn’t want to stay friends with someone like that.
When you’re with her, you feel important and valued and worthy.
And if I’m being brutally honest, she’s the only reason you’re going to overcome this 3 a.m. neurotic phone call detailing your existential crisis.
So go ahead. Call you’re long-distance best friend. She really is the best thing ever.
