It was only a few days into the deployment. I looked down at my iPhone and it was completely blank. Couldn’t turn the phone on or off. Couldn’t press a single button. Couldn’t reset it. Murphy’s law of deployment was in full force and I still had months of deployment to conquer.
The worst part?
When you live overseas–at least in our experience–you need a power of attorney to do anything with your cell phone. They tell you this when the service member signs the phone contract. So there I was with a cell phone that didn’t work and a power of attorney that suddenly went missing.
Murphy’s Law of Deployment.
What can go wrong will go wrong. That’s a Murphy’s Law given. But if you are a military spouse, what can go wrong will go 10 times horribly wrong beyond what you ever expected.
It’s time we all had a sense of humor about these things. I created a list of Murphy’s for civilians versus military spouses. Let us speak the truth.
Appliances.
Civilians – Washing machine starts making a funny noise.
Military spouses – Washing machine floods your entire house.
Kids.
Civilians – Youngest kid gets a small rash on his back.
Military spouses – Youngest kid suffers a major impetigo outbreak after attending a bouncy house birthday party.
Pets.
Civilians – Dog throws up outside after eating too much grass.
Military spouses – Dog eats two boxes of rat poison requiring you to give him hydrogen peroxide to induce projectile vomiting and save his life.
Rodant infestations.
Civilians – Mouse makes itself at home in your kitchen cabinet.
Military spouses – Epic-sized rat family invades your entire home while you are on vacation so you can return to the horror.
Small jobs around the house.
Civilians – Door knob becomes loose and requires re-tightening.
Military spouses – Door knob falls off accidentally locking your kids in the house while you are outside, requiring you to break into your own home to get your kids out.
Natural disasters.
Civilians – Thunderstorms pass over during a planned family outing.
Military spouses – Category 5 hurricane heads straight to your duty station, forcing you to evacuate for 2 weeks.
Dye jobs.
Civilians – You get your hair done. The color is slightly lighter than you wanted.
Military spouses – You get your hair done. It is bright orange. You have to spend hundreds on correction color, and your hair is so damaged you need to cut it all off.
Your own health.
Civilians – You pull a muscle in your back.
Military spouses – Your back goes completely out. You are bedridden and you now rely on your kids to make meals, which consists of only peanut butter and jelly.
Homecoming.
Civilians – You spend two days preparing for your spouse to return home from an important trip and he’s over an hour late.
Military spouses – You spend two days preparing for your spouse to return home from deployment and he gets delayed by one day every day for the next 3 months, missing Christmas, New Years’ and your birthday.
And of course, the car.
Civilians – You get in a fender bender on the way home from the grocery store. Everyone is fine. The car is drivable and it’s repaired in a few days.
Military spouses – Car catches on fire and then a tree falls on it. Everyone is fine, but your car is totaled and sent to the junkyard.
It’s time to break the Murphy’s cycle.
If you are ready to keep your car safe from Murphy, you need a reliable car. And if your going to get yourself a more reliable car, then you may as well get the best deal possible.

God bless you for being that spouse that many hope to be. I just hope that Murphy’s Law will take a vacation from you and your family and let you have some peace. Hugs from AZ!

Thanks Jamie!
